Not thrilled about missing out on summer vacation? If you, like us, are experiencing a grumpy mood that comes from staying put a little too long, we’d like to offer up some travel-themed photography dripping with glamour, fantasy, and nostalgia. In our estimation, the legendary Mid-Century photographer of the jet-setters, celebrities and well-to-do, Slim Aarons (1916-2006), invented the genre.

Aarons’ vision of the good life has been tremendously influential and even today, superstar designer Johnathan Adler has cited Aarons as one of his heroes. Aarons glibly described his work as “…photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.”

Aaron himself learned his craft as a photojournalist in WWII. A recipient of a Purple Heart, he gave the medal away, determined to “walk on the sunny side of the street” for the rest of his career.

This picture, Sun Worship, by Slim Aarons conjures up those lazy summer days by the pool, suntanning, reading, and relaxing. Known for his celebrity portraits and images of the post-war rich and famous, Slim Aarons mixed glamour, architecture, and beautiful people in his iconic images. But Aarons is not the only photographer that takes you to places real and imagined.

What is summer without a good road trip? German-born photographer, Stefanie Schneider takes us on a technicolor summer road trip in her image, Spare Parts (29 Palms, CA). As the American West as a backdrop, and her unique process of working with chemical mutations of expired Polaroid film stock, Schneider creates fascinating visual narratives complete with sagebrush, roadside motels, and a cast of mysterious characters.

London-based photographer, Marianne Nix transports us to a tranquil poolside in her captivating image, Palms Reflected in a Pool. Marianne Nix’s education in both fashion and digital media combine to create photographs that evoke shadow, light, and place. What we love about this poolside photograph is that it shows a moodier side of a tropical paradise.
